I always reverse into parking space (unless I can drive through)

It’s parking for grown ups.

I back into spots when I can’t pull through 90% of the time.

Always. Part of it is because I back into my garage and my wife pulls in so our doors open to the middle (only way we can both fit in garage and still exit the vehicle), but it’s still habit regardless even if not in the garage. Lots of kids and other people around, so I would rather pull straight out with full visibility.

Yes, but only because it scrapes less. But I usually street park and only park in the driveway (or front yard) if we’re expecting snow bad enough for plows.

I back into my driveway only if I’m expecting it to snow. That way the clear spot under the car is streetward of my driven wheels so I get better traction and it’s easier to get the car out.

Yes, if possible, I like to back into a spot. It’s a habit I got out of the military, in case you need to leave in a hurry, having your vehicle facing out ready to move is a good thing.

It’s funny because I LITERALLY just walked in the house from backing my car into the driveway, and saw this. I really only back in when it’s snowing, like it is today.

No. I don’t even understand why some people always have to back in to parking spots even in lots that aren’t very busy. To me, unless there are a lot of cars going by, it’s faster to pull in and back out. At something like a sporting event or concert backing in makes sense.

Only when loading/unloading. I often have someone behind me, so reversing in becomes a game - blinker on, drive past driveway, wait for tailgater to either back up or go around, back into driveway. My favorite is when I have a trailer on the back and need to put that in the driveway or yard.

Counterpoint: My neighbors reverse into their driveway and garage all the time.

Kinja'd!!! shop-teacher > GE90man

Kinja'd!!!1

No, but I often back into parking spots. With such a long vehicle (Sierra crew cab), it’s often the only way I can get in/out of the spot. I need the wheels that turn to pivot our into the aisle. No such limitations in my driveway.

I don’t back in unless I’m unloading or loading stuff into the back. I never got why so many people back in. The only time I get it is if you’re unloading or loading or if you’re expecting a huge crowd when you leave.

I live in a complex with about 9 families. All the big huge trucks back in, nobody else does. I don’t get it.

Edit: I just read this https://www.huffingtonpost.com/quora/why-do-people-back-up-int_b_3194602.html so that sort of explains the habit of the big huge trucks.

Only if it’s going to snow a ton.

In a lot, I’ll back in if it’s a busy lot. Although at work I back into a corner spot just so it’s easier to get out when it’s time to leave work. Those are precious seconds :)

I do, but that’s just because I find it easier to squeeze into tight spots when backing in.

I don;t have tight sports, I just happened to have over size cars:

1) Navigator L

2) Long Wheel base 7 series

3) Grand Marquis

The SS is the smallest car in my “fleet” and is a tight fit, width wise, into the shortest spot in the garage.

Kinja'd!!!1

I back into a lot of parking spots, because the length of the vehicle (Sierra crew cab) makes it difficult or sometimes impossible to get in/out unless my steering axle is on the aisle side, where it has room to pivot. I will often do it even if the lot is not busy, in case it is by the time I come back. I’ve been put in some hairy situations in times when I didn’t plan ahead like that. I always try to find a spot where I can pull through instead.

I regularly back into our driveway because we have enough room and those goofy ramped curbs so it’s smoother to take them at an angle while backing (rather than pulling straight in forward.) Plus it’s slightly down hill so I can basically roll the car back into the driveway. I rarely do it in public lots unless it’s tight and easier to back in.

i probably could (im not sure tho)... theres a flat at the end of my street it has enough parking space for maybe a third of its residents... so people just park anywhere... this includes in front of driveways... so i figured rather than dealing with being blocked in every other day i’ll just park out front.

(but as i dont have a car anymore its a non issue now... i let the neighbours use my driveway for their caravan now)

When I last used a garage I would back in. Mainly because it was a narrow bay, and it was easier to get out of backed in. Also because there was a hill in front and when snowy, I’d much prefer to be facing forward going up it.

Always, at home (common garage, no driveway) or work (same) or whenever possible. Easier, safer, and quicker to get away.

Two people with driveways come to mind - my mom and grandma. I don’t back in there, as they live in low traffic areas where reversing is easy, and both have driveways steep enough to concern me about the approach angle and exhaust pipes/tips.

True, but at least I can survey the situation before I back in, and I also have a rear view camera (wife’s car does not), giving me a little more visibility. I’d also rather back into the driveway away from cars VS into the street with oncoming traffic.

I do, and I don’t get why pretty much no other American does, especially on streets that are busy. It’s so much more dangerous to back out into traffic than it is to back into your driveway. But, people are dumb, lazy, and can’t drive.

Yup, I always back in. For a lot of the same reasons that have already been mentioned. Mostly because I’m going to have to back up anyway at some point, so I might as well do it while I can easily see down the road in both directions.

Yep. Then you have to do the back and forth shuffle. I hate that.

My next truck (whenever that happens) I am going to get another crew cab, but this time with the 6'6" bed. I’m counting on a backup camera to compensate for the extra difficulty parking caused by the extra length.

Yes because I like opening the garage and seeing the cars greet me like happily awaiting puppies. Plus getting in the car, starting the engine, hearing the music, and watching as the light filters in as the door rises is a great way to start the day.

Always, also into my garage. Kind of have to back 1 car into the garage and pull the other in to make it easy to get out of both, but I’ve always backed into the driveway.

Backing in is a habit I developed as a young driver of a pickup with a cap. Visibility to the sides for backing out with those is non-existent. But even with other vehicles, the improved visibility pulling out is worth it. Backing out of a driveway onto a busy street can be dangerous.

Plus, backing in makes for a quicker getaway (if you like to fantasize you are pulling a heist).
